The second half of life is a marvelous time to reconnect with our authentic selves, and to chart a course of meaning and purpose for the years ahead. This journey needs to be one of wholeness: attending to mind, body, soul, and heart.
Studies demonstrate that healthy aging is a holistic endeavor. The World Health Organization's long-standing definition of health is "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Even the term health has its roots in the word "whole" and "healing."
The Encore Life Framework offers pathways that help us sculpt a life of wisdom, wellness, belonging, and purpose. The process is one of discovery, but also action, as we learn ways to translate our priorities into action.
The Four Quadrants
The model is divided into four Quadrants: Mind, Body, Soul, and Heart. For each quadrant, we ask an essential question, and identify pathways to realize our goals. The pathways repreesent a synthesis of research findings associated with well being and health and wellness in the second half of life.
Mind: Mind is the intellectual hub, where we challenge ourselves mentally. Question: How can I appreciate and share my Wisdom? Pathways: Vocation, Learning, Abundance, Autonomy
Soul: The Soul is home to the spirit. Question: How can I connect with my sense of Purpose in life? Pathways: Spirituality, Legacy, Integrity, Growth
Heart: The Heart is home to relationships. Question: How can I nurture a sense of Belonging in my life? Pathways: Support, Love, Kinship, Community
Body: The Body is the physical expression of the person. Question: How can I develop a lifestyle based on Wellness? Pathways: Vitality, Health, Place, Mindfulness
